    Stress: A Critical Review

    CLAIM:
Most stress people deal with is negative therefore there should be better forms of stress relief in America.

    EVIDENCE:
In the digital documentary Stress, the author states, “Believe it or not stress is actually a good thing, it’s this thing called hyper arousal which basically is a sense of adrenaline that runs through our body making us either want to run really fast or fight.” However, right before the author states this opinion he also informs us that stress can have mild symptoms such as headaches as well as more serious effects such as obesity, depression and heart attacks. The second man to be interviewed revealed that he smoked and in took mass amounts of caffeine to deal with his stress which both aren’t as positive to the body as other methods of stress relief. After, he states, “ I did have a heart attack from over pushing myself so much which lead to another heart attack eighteen months later and then three years after that I had another mass heart attack and had to have a heart transplant.” This had a negative impact on his life making it hard to see how stress can also be “a good thing” PATHOS. “Cigarette smoking accounts for about 443,000 premature deaths – including 49,400 in nonsmokers.” LOGOS/PATHOS. “Adult smoking rates in the U.S. stood at 20.6 percent in 2008, moving up slightly from 2007. There is much progress still to be made in reducing tobacco use.” (pressroom.cancer.org) LOGOS. Because the number of adult smokers are increasing and so many deaths are caused by this habit its only right that our society shouldn’t provide such deadly “stress relievers” ETHOS. To protect ourselves from stress and the relievers that only hurt us more we should pay attention to why the cigarettes Americans buy don’t say the truth about the later side effects you will regret for the rest of your life.

    Stress: A Critical Review
Stress can be a genetic condition. It is related to a numerous amount of other problems as well, almost all of which are genetic. Depression, obesity, and ADHD are all gentic conditions that a person can monitor, yes, but never truly control. Which means that you may not necessarily be able to control stress either. Just relaxing may not always help your stress if you're heartbeat is alread over loaded due to cholesterol or just simply because you are a naturally hyper active person. It is also easier to get stressed with those conditions due to the extra amount of problems you encounter. As a person whom has dealt with depression and stress, I must say, that it is very easy to bring me down about things that I must do and places I must be. As where a more stable person can have things easily organized and not have to worry as hard about the little things that would stress me out. One of my good friends has ADHD and it's even easier to stress him out than it is myself. Its because of extra conditions that stress can be a killer, not just the stress its self. While stress can be brought on on its own, it isn't considered as deadly as when someone with a genetic condition starts to stress out.

    Stress Critical Review

Stress affects so many people, in so many different ways. As the director told us, “stress affects about 4 in every 10 people”. That is a lot of people who have to deal with stress and what it can do to their bodies. Stress is good for people when it is needed, like in fight or flight situations, but when stress is produced that is not needed, it is a bad thing. Stress can cause problems with all parts of the body. It can cause heart disease, sleep problems, depression, skin conditions, obesity and much more. The most common affects of too much stress on the body is heart disease and sleep issues (www.helpguide.org). The heart can be majorly affected by stress; it can make the heart stop working properly. Stress makes it very hard for people to sleep. They will be tired but they can’t fall asleep because their brains won’t shut off. There are thoughts keeping them awake even though they desperately need the sleep. Stress can be caused by every day things, which is why so many people suffer from it. It can be caused by work, financial problems and just being to busy (www.helpguide.org). Many high schoolers get stressed out by being to busy. Most adult are stressed out by their work and financial problems. Stress affects all ages.

    A Critical Review: Stress

As a human being gets older more stress is put on them.In the documentary Stress, the interviewees that are older have a lot more stress put on them compared to the younger interviewees. The younger interviewees only stated that they had stress through school work. Although the older interviewees stated that they had stress through work, house work, and the ways they dealt with stress. In the documentary the younger one said, “… homework, school, grades, they’re just not working out for me.” This is what a teenager finds stressful. Now what an adult finds stressful is much more than that. The older one stated, “..my diversions, like watching sports and things like that help take my mind off of it but I never truly escape from it.” This shows how much stress affects adults. They never really aren’t stressed ever.
When a person becomes older they have more to worry about. They may be responsible for not only taking care of themselves but a wife and kids as well. As a human gets older they also have to worry about a job, bills, and health. When someone’s older they also have to focus more on what’s going on in their life. They have a lot more responsibilities and they have to make sure they meet the standards of an average person. For example an interviewee stated that, “ You have people that are always calling having problems with claims or billing.. basically the stress is just involved with that. That’s showing how much stress others will put on an adult.
When someone worries about stress they deal with it in all the wrong ways. When someone deals with stress in the wrong way that puts even more stress on them. For example, when someone smokes to deal with stress all that is doing is putting a lot more stress on their body. In the video an interviewee stated that they had more stress put on them when they dealt with it in the wrong way. They got very sick and so that’s a prime example that when people get older they just put more stress on themselves by dealing with it in the wrong way. The fist interviewee stated that, “I drank a lot of coffee and I smoked cigarettes. I did all the wrong things to deal with stress. I threw myself into my job more and worked harder.” This person did all the wrong things to deal with his stress.

    A Critical Review: Stress
Stress affects everyone whether you are young or old and it causes people to pick up bad habits, therefore Americans should find ways to deal with their stress and just be happy. Dr. Kruetter said stress can cause health issues, heart attacks, and cause people to start smoking or drinking. Stress can raise blood pressure, suppress the immune system, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, contribute to infertility, and speed up the aging process. Long-term stress can even rewire the brain, leaving you more vulnerable to anxiety and depression. Stress health problems also include, pain of any kind, digestive problems, sleep problems, depression, obesity, Autoimmune diseases and skin conditions.(helpguide.org). People get negatively stressed for many reasons like having many bills to pay, lots of work to do, too much homework and rocky relationships. This author has stress daily. She has the stress of family life at home, trying to get all the cleaning and chores done for her family, having loads of homework every night and having challenges in relationships with her friends. But there are positive reasons for stress as well such as, marriage, buying a house or going to college. Although most people experience negative stress affects, positive reasons for stress can also make life hard and make people anxious. To avoid stress or help it go away, you can strengthen relationships; by going on a walk or workout with a friend, having a dinner date or joining in some kind of extra curricular activity, you can learn how to relax by doing yoga or doing calming activities in your daily life

    Stress: A Critical Review

Although most people think stress only affects adults, it can, in fact, start at pretty early ages. In the documentary, an interviewee, Jakob, stated, “School, homework, grades… it’s just not workin’ out for me” Teenagers deal with stress on a day-to-day basis. Whether it’s with school, sports, jobs, family, friends, or all of the above, stress is very active in young lifestyles. Adult case of stress can more often be more extreme, like the interviewee who had two heart attacks and had to have a heart transplant, most likely because adults have been dealing with stress for a longer period of time. But don’t let that fool you; teens, young adults, and sometimes youth or preteens deal with great amounts of stress as well. For the past couple of years, whenever I have felt stressed personally, my mom would tell me “you’re too young to be stressed; you don’t even know what that means”. This is, however not true. In fact, it is estimated that ‘10% of all teens suffer from an anxiety disorder’ (teenhelp.com). Teenagers and adults both experience a wide variety of stressors, which cause stress. Not all stress is bad, which is linked to the ‘fight of flight’ system. The stressors, however, are different for each age group, thus causing different reactions. Depending on how one reacts to the stressors they face, the outcome can be horrendous, like a heart transplant, or okay, like using healthy outlets, such as extracurricular activities or music. Either way, stress does not only affect one age group, anyone is susceptible.

    Stress Critical Review
The author of this documentary elaborates on stress and bombards you with facts about the topic. But all the interviews, statistics, facts in general revolve around one form of stress, bad or negative stress. Stress isn’t always a bad thing. It is true that almost every single person on the planet “suffers” from one source of negative stress. But if people did not have stress, they would find themselves bored or not living up to their potential causing negative effects to no stress. They may become depressed and act out just to feel like they are doing something. If people stress certain aspects of their lives like teenagers with grades, they could push themselves to improve them. Then that causes their parents to get off their cases relieving the stress of the relationship between parent and child. Positive stress producing positive outcomes and accomplishments. Everyone has stress and suffers from negative stress but not everyone has drastic effects like heart disease and obesity. You need a good balance of negative and positive in every aspect of life in order to be human. So elaborating only on negative stress is a misinformation.

    Stress
Claim: In American life stress is a huge part of it and I feel that people need to stop stressing about life and just need to chill and live life to the fullest.
Evidence: In the interview with John Gunter he said that his work made him stress or burnout at times and that forced him to under go a lot of hardships that could of been avoided at the time if he didn't stress out. He said that he took up smoking and his attitude out of work was bad, but the most important thing that he had to go through was that he had a heart attack and he had to go into surgery because of this and this all could of been avoided if he just would of chilled and not gone through all that stress. LOGOS Money and work are the most common cause of stress. Stress have had Americans go through a lot of symptoms of stress 77% experienced physical symptoms, 73% experienced psychological symptoms (www.proactivechange.com). This is crazy because I know that people get stressed at times but I didn't know that over three quarters of the American population suffer physical, and psychological problems and break down and resort to horrible things like smoking or chewing tobacco. ETHOS I believe that when you are stressed the last thing that you should do is resort to the smoking because I know that I helps the stress but doing something that bad to your body, in the long run is going to hurt you. Also when you smoke it can effect so many other things. LOGOS secondhand smoke contains more than 50 cancer-chemical compounds, 11 of which are known to be Group 1 carcinogens (quitsmoking.about.com). I feel like companies need to stop over working their employees and need to have a agreeable work load and not to much of they don't get all stressed out, this also should apply to school and the work that is expected for the students to do. All in all this was a great digital documentary to illustrate what happens to Americans that stress out and what are the bad things that come out of stress.

    A Critical Review
In the documentary, Stress, a lot of consequences of stress are listed. However, most of these symptoms applied to older people, teens do not have as many stress related health issues. Teenagers do not seem to be as effected as adults are by stress. As a teen herself, this author knows that the average life of a high school student is hectic and busy, but bearable. Rarely do students stay in a state of stress; they unwind by hanging with friends and family. It is constant and unrelenting stress that causes health problems like increased blood pressure, headaches, and insomnia (www.uic.edu). Even though making time to relax may actually make them busier most teens realize the necessity of it for their heath and happiness. Plus, as teenagers they generally have better health than someone older, making it easier to bounce back if they do experience stress. Although stress is a part of everyone’s life, the consequences are not as dire as the documentary, Stress, makes them out to be.

Stress is an unnecessary obstacle for many students and an unhealthy problem for growing teens. In the digital documentary, “Stress,” the author states that stress can cause many things like headaches, hair loss, and even heart attacks. Stress is a problem most people face on a daily basis and is not good for anyone to experience in heavy amounts; however, school can be one of the most stressful times in one’s life. As written on teenhelp.com, 10% of all teens suffer from an anxiety disorder; this is a frightening statistic that should be much lower. There should be something drastic done to help teens cope with the extreme levels of stress common in everyday life in school. Along with sports, homework, and regular classwork, students also have to deal with the stress of relationships with boyfriends/girlfriends and friends who can be just as much of a pain. The author of the documentary states that “stress can be a good thing,” however, in these situations stress is unhelpful. Grades, personal lives, and everything suffer.

In this documentary about stress, many consequences and leading causes of stress are listed. The author states that certain things that people claim should relieve stress actually do quite the opposite. For example, people say that smoking cigarettes reduces stress, when its actually been shown that they increase the amount of stress the individual goes through. Another thing thought to reduce stress is drinking caffeine, but caffeine and stress can both elevate cortisol levels in the body which can lead to negative stress related effects on the body (stress.about.com). One man being interviewed stated that he went through a stress related heart attack, and he smoked and drank a lot of caffeine. Not only does smoking cause stress, it also is horrible for your body in the long run.

This documentary about stress shows and explains how many people deal with stress in their everyday lives and how dangerous it can be. This claim is backed up by a doctors interview and an interview with a man who had so much stress he had heart attacks and a heart transplant. In this documentary the author reasoned that stress can be very harmful to people and affects many people in America and followed up by an interview with a teen with stress and an adult with stress. The author of the documentary used logos to appeal to the logical side of the viewer by explaining how stress can affect the body in negative and permanent ways. The author also used pathos in the documentary, Stress, by appealing to the emotional side of the viewer by listing all the factors that contribute to stress and what stress feels like. This documentary was very well done and had good facts, evidence and reasoning to back up their claim.

    Stress: A Critical Review

In some cases, stress isn’t always a bad thing, it can push you to get things done, for instance: if you have a lot of school work that you need to get done, you are going to stress over it and procrastinate doing it, but all that’s doing is making it worse, in your mind you will keep thinking about how you need to do assignments and turn things in, and it wont go away until you either do it or take a zero on it. For people that do the assignments and get everything done, that stress is pushing you to get it done and get it off your mind, but it could also overwhelm you, if you have tons of things you need to do, your going to stress about them and not get things done, so you need to do things a little at a time instead of focusing on all of it, that way you can concentrate and do it right, rather than doing it all wrong because you are in a rush. Most high school students probably deal with many different types of stress, but for our parents, I imagine it must be quite a bit worse, sure some students might have jobs and things to worry about, but adults have so much more, they have bills to pay, kids to take care of, and there jobs and other things on top of that.
