Dunce Student or Incompetent Teacher Critical Review
Not all the problems kids have with their school work is their fault, sometimes it is the teachers fault that they are having issues. These issues can result from the teacher not being open to helping the child or from the child being intimidated by the teacher. Both of these will result in the child having issue with their grades. Some teachers are so busy with the after school events they do, that they simply don’t have time to come in and help the students. These poor students are stuck figuring out the problems themselves. Some students need extra help and if they don’t receive this extra help their grades will show it. Other students are very shy and don’t know how to approach a teacher about getting help. Some students feel intimidated by their teachers, so they don’t go ask the teacher for the help that they need. This is not the teachers fault, but it is still a problem that teachers and students deal with all they time. No one person can take all the blame for bad grades.
A Critical Review: Dunce Students or Incompetent Teachers. CLAIM: When it comes to a good teacher its not only about the fun in the class but also about how you learn. EVIDENCE: According to William J.F Lue, “A teacher with a positive outlook and an enthusiastic attitude is a better candidate for a teacher.” ETHOS. Later it was stated that students don’t like to be looked down on and would rather have someone help them that has an easygoing temper. Although it is important for teachers to make a class easy going and fun students have to understand that the teachers have to teach certain topics. Many teachers have different ways they like to go about teaching all these topics and sometimes they forget how to use their skills. Teacher two that was interviewed states, “ I have to realize I have 187 days, so it’s easy for me to get excited and it turns into frustration because I want to teach you so much.” However later in the interview he also states that he realizes later that he can continue with the lesson the next day and tries to keep students interest and on their toes. “To keep teachers on track the districts insert what they call “curriculum integration” into each class, which means they add topics that must be covered by the end of the year” (teacherstoday). LOGOS. So when some teachers may be worst then others students need to realize that teachers are teaching you what you’ll need and still try to incorporate other things into a class.
E.D Mrs. Mackenzie English 11 14 November, 2010 Incompetent Teachers or Dunce Students: A Critical Review
Students learn better in an environment where the teacher can relate to the student, and won’t criticize the student for not understanding. In the documentary, “Incompetent Teachers or Dunce Students”, Mr. Hawk stated that it is important to relate to the students. This is true because when the student-teacher relationship is good, the student is more likely to have a will to learn and understand what said teacher is trying to teach. If a teacher does not try to have any kind of relationship with their students, the students are going to have more negative attitude and less will to even participate in the class. Now I’m not saying a good class is one that isn’t productive and the students don’t learn anything, but neither is the opposite. If students are put into a position where they have all this work just shoved at them, with no explanation for what they don’t understand, that student isn’t even going to try. Also, if the students are unable to have any kind of fun in the classroom, they are probably not going to enjoy learning that subject, and may not even attend all classes. Also, while homework is important practice for what goes on in the classroom, I think it is highly unnecessary for the teacher to assign hours worth of homework every night. The teachers should always try to relate to their students, and be understanding. There’s nothing worse than a drill sergeant for a high school teacher!
L.P. Mrs. MacKenzie English 11 November 11, 2010 A Critical Review: Incompetent Teachers or Dunce Students Students learn better and more in an environment where teachers have a more optimistic outlook on the class and don’t get angry when the student needs help with something. With this author’s experience working with incompetent or understanding teachers, I always get along better with the understanding teacher and I have a good grade in their class. When I am dealing with a teacher that always seems mad or gets upset when I don’t understand, I don’t ask questions or as for help anymore because I’m afraid of that teacher, my grade in a class with a teacher like that is always below a “c.” In this documentary, Mr. Hawk says it’s important to relate to the student, this is true because when a student and teacher have no type of relationship, they communicate badly which will make the student not understand what they are doing and not ask questions so if they don’t know what to do they are doing they won’t do it which will cause their grade to drop. Another important part of the classroom is fun, if there is no fun in the classroom; students are less likely to try or, even to go to that class. Classes where you learn more and have fun at the same time have a higher attendance rate, and better attitudes from students as well as teachers. Teachers can either make a student’s life easier and more enjoyable or harder and dreadful. They can make a student’s life easier and more enjoyable by having fun in class, teaching the students valuable information and not assigning ridiculous amounts of homework every night or doing the opposite and making student’s lives more stressful. This author thinks every student and teacher needs to communicate and have a positive relationship for students to succeed.
M.M Mrs. Mackenzie 14 November 2010 A Critical Review In the documentary, Incompetent Teachers or Dunce Students, they stated some facts about whether the gender or age affected the likability and promotional ability of the teacher. However, does it really matter? Teachers are meant to inspire and inspiration can come from anywhere, man, woman, young or old. Everyone has that one teacher that they remember even after they get out of school because of the impact that specific teacher had on them. This inspiration is what makes the student care about the subject being taught and to try hard to improve themselves. This inspiration does not necessarily come from the amount in common that they have like a student suggested in the documentary, it comes from the passion the teacher has for the subject and for teaching. If there is none, then it is impossible to argue against the fact that you cannot inspire people if you have no passion. In the top ten qualities of a good teacher (www.ripplesofimprovement.com) gender or age is not even mentioned.
Claim: In school students are very hesitant to ask their teachers questions and sometimes they are at fault because most of the teacher come off as not approachable and it affects their education.
Evidence: Most of the students that come to high school aren't so worried about the kids in high school are stuff like that. What they are most worried about it the teachers and the school work that they have to endure. Teachers that come off as mean and stubborn aren't going to get approval from the students that are in that teachers class and the students will break down and start doing bad in that class. Now if it's different, if the teacher is fun and the class is fun then the students are going to earn respect from the students and are going to do well in that class. LOGOS In a study most students would like to work in groups or have group activities in their curriculum (teensknow.org). This is very true because I know that I learn better when I work with a partner and I bet if I ask some of my friends they would say the same thing because it is more fun with a partner. PATHOS There needs to be more teachers in high school that are more giving and approachable to students so that they can feel comfortable in the class and to be successfully in that class and in the long run it will make the teacher more successful. Nobody in the world would want a scary crazy teacher. All in all I agree to this documentary because I have a few teachers this way and it is rough to do good in that teachers class.
Teachers definitely have an impact on how students learn, behave, and their self-esteem. Teachers influence their students just like their friends. Depending on how a teacher responds to a student, how they teach them, and how the class runs really influences a students motives to do well in the class, what they learn and take out of it, and how they feel. Age, gender, experience, the years amount of teaching, how the class runs, the control the teacher has over the classroom, and the amount of work enforced upon a student may have different affects on some students. In all reality, it’s all opinion on which student likes/prefers which teacher. Some male students may prefer male teachers where as some male students don’t care. If a teacher is old, some students may prefer that because they have had more experience in the teaching business. The only things that really affect every student, not just individually or by preference, is the control a teacher has over the environment , the teachers attitude toward the student, and the work load. If teachers have no control of how students behave and respect each other, everything is chaotic and students may act negatively upon that. If teachers have a negative attitude towards their students, that could damage a students self-esteem or make them really upset. And if teachers give too much homework or school work to their students, they might get stressed out and might give up. There will never be the “perfect” teacher, but to an extent, teachers need to get down to the students and have control over what goes on in the classroom.
In this documentary, one claim being made is that the more a teacher can relate to a student, the more the student will learn. If a teacher is approachable and willing to help a student, they are more likely to remember what they are taught and to pass class. When a teacher is negative, it can affect the whole class’s productivity, which creates a bad learning environment for kids. Another important factor in a teenager’s willingness to learn is how fun the class is. If a kid enjoys going to a certain class, they will do better in that class. If a student despises going to a certain class, they probably won’t do great in the class, or they might be tempted to not even go at all. In the end, it all goes back to whether or not the teacher and student are both willing to learn but also have a good time.
Incompetent teachers or dunce teachers?: A Critical Review
In high school, students are going to have teachers that they like and dislike. They may like a teacher because of the way he/she teaches, all students learn differently and need to connect with teachers in different ways, students may like a teacher because they are flexible and help them learn things in ways that they understand, other teachers may be more strict and only want things done their way with no ways around it. In my opinion, male students tend to get along better with male teachers, and same with females and female teachers, also depending on the teachers teaching style that also influences if a student likes them or not, if a teacher jokes around with students while teaching as well, students are most likely going to respect and pay attention to that teacher more then they would to a strict teacher. The age of the teacher also has and impact on whether or not they are going to be an uptight teacher or more laidback, usually depending on the person, younger teachers tend to be more joking and laidback, as where older teachers are usually more strict.
