Teens in the Fast Food Industry: A Critical Review
CLAIM: Not all business owners and managers treat their teen workers unfairly however businesses need to treat teens better.
EVIDENCE: Dawn Dimasi past owner of Papa Murphy’s claims when hiring people he wouldn’t necessarily chose to hire one person over the other because age difference. In fact Dawn claims, “ I like to have a mix of both because I think having an adult in a position with the teenager they can learn a lot from each other. I liked having the kids there because it was a positive experience for them and rewarding for us to see that they had a positive experience” PATHOS. Many businesses are ran differently and depending on where you work according to interviewers two and three you get different levels of respect from the staff and from your friends and peers at school. However according to interviewer two she is treated unfairly because she is the newest worker although some of the staff are the same age as her if not younger. Because teen workers make up 19.9% of the worlds work force without a full education why do older staff members that have the same job feel the need to make younger employees feel less important. According to the Department of Labor and Employment, “The current minimum wage is $7.24” LOGOS. Because most teens go to school everyday and have extra curricular activities they wont get paid much anyways due to their hours of availability. When business owners and managers hire a teen they need to realize that teens are also doing a favor for the whole business together. Instead of treating younger employees with disrespect businesses need to remember how little teens get paid and the other responsibilities of their everyday lives.ETHOS
A Critical Review: Teens In the Fast Food Industry
It’s much easier for a kid to get a job in the fast food industry over anywhere else. In the documentary the directors stated the fact that, “Teens make up 19.9% of the working force of America’s fast food industry… teens make up only 3.1% of other industries, that’s a difference of 16.8%” That’s a huge difference! Teens need flexible hours because of school. Most other jobs will not be willing to give them the hours they need. Fast food is really a teens best bet when it comes to that. Managers actually prefer kids over adults. In the interview the owner of Papa Murphy’s, when asked if he preferred to hire teens or adults, he stated that, “…If they were working at the Papa Murphy’s pizza store I felt like I couldn’t pay them enough and I didn’t think that they would be happy there so I actually preferred the kids.” This could be a main reason why it’s easier for teens to get a job in the fast food industry. Other industries would prefer to hire adults because they can pay them enough unlike the fast food industry.
Teens in the fast food industry: A Critical Review
Teens today work in the fast food industry because they are the easiest places to get jobs, in a lot of places you either need to be eighteen years old or have experience, or even both. The only other options are places like Walmart or Safeway, and even there, older people get chosen to work there over teens. The bad thing about working at a fast food restaurant is that teens will be more likely to eat the unhealthy food because it is so convenient to them. With the economy how it is, everyone is looking to get jobs wherever they can and it makes it hard for teens to find a job in places other than McDonalds or Wendys, I think a solution would be to make teens eligible for more jobs rather than making them be eighteen before they can work there.
